I have been doing some work on a spare gearbox for my 1934 Austin 12. and have hit a problem. I was hoping to take the gearbox to Northern Rebores , but can't get a reply from them on the phone. Have they gone out of business? If so who else can look at a old Austin gearbox?

Thanks from Bill French

Last time I was there was when I had the crank reground on my Traction Avant back in 2014

Northern Rebore closed down Bill and not that long after Ron retired. They were supposed to be carrying on but I don't know what happened.

Hi Dave
I have since found out that after Ron retired two men took over the business but only lasted about 18 months then had to close down. It is a pity Northern Rebores/Ron were the only local firm that could do white metal bearings.

A lot of knowledge and expertise was lost when Ron retired. Unfortunately it's happening all over the country and the places to get those specialist jobs done are disappearing.

It's one of the reasons I converted my engine from White Metal to Shell bearings when the engine was rebuilt. Luckily the parts are available to do that on the Traction, other car owners won't have the option.
